Description
Halloween calls for a spooky cocktail, right?! These blood orange Halloween margaritas are just the thing! That gorgeous color and fun spooky garnishes make them perfect for Halloween parties. Whip up a single drink or make a whole pitcher to share!
Ingredients
Rim and Spooky Garnish:
- Hawaiian black salt or Tajin (or both), for the rim
- dried or dehydrated blood orange slices
- candy eyeballs or small plastic spiders
Single Drink:
- 2 ounces (60 ml) fresh blood orange juice (about 1 large blood orange)
- 1 ½ ounces (45 ml) tequila
- 1 ounce (30 ml) orange liqueur (I like to use Cointreau)
- 1 ounce (30 ml) fresh lime juice (about the juice of 1 lime)
- 2 teaspoons runny honey, or to taste (can also use agave nectar)
- ice cubes
Pitcher (8 servings):
- 2 cups fresh blood orange juice
- 1 ½ cups tequila
- 1 cup orange liqueur (I like to use Cointreau)
- 1 cup fresh lime juice
- ⅓ cup honey, or to taste (can also use agave nectar)
Instructions
Single Drink:
- Rim the glass: Run a lime wedge around the rim of your glass and dip it into Hawaiian black salt, Tajin or a mix of both.
- Make the spooky garnish: Cut a small slit in a dried blood orange slice (about half way) so you can slide it onto the side of the glass later. Attach candy eyeballs or a little plastic spider with a dab of thick honey, melted chocolate or icing.
- Shake up the margarita: Add the blood orange juice, tequila, orange liqueur, lime juice and honey to a cocktail shaker along with a handful of ice. Cover and shake vigorously for about 15 seconds.
- Pour and serve: Fill the rimmed glass with ice cubes and strain the blood orange margarita over top. Add your spooky garnish by sliding it on the edge of the glass and you’re ready to sip!
Pitcher (8 servings):
- Stir everything together: Add the fresh blood orange juice, tequila, orange liqueur, fresh lime juice and honey to a pitcher. Stir well and pop in the fridge until needed (up to 12 hours).
- Prep the glasses and garnishes: Run a lime wedge around the rims of your glasses and dip into Hawaiian black salt, Tajin or a mix of both. Cut a small slit in each dried blood orange slice about half way (one orange slice per drink). Attach candy eyeballs or a little plastic spider with a dab of thick honey, melted chocolate or icing. Set aside.
- Pour and serve: When it’s party time, fill the rimmed glasses with ice cubes and pour in the margarita mixture. Add your spooky garnishes by sliding one on the edge of each glass and they’re ready to serve!
Notes
Fresh is the best! Use freshly squeezed blood orange and lime juice for the most delicious margaritas.
Tequila: Use a good quality tequila that you enjoy! Blanco or silver tequila has a cleaner, more neutral flavor that lets the citrus shine and keeps the blood orange color vibrant. Reposado tequila has a warmer, more aromatic flavor that pairs beautifully with the blood orange. Both work great!
Honey: Runny honey works best here! If yours is too thick, stir it with a little warm water in a small bowl to thin it out so it mixes easily into your margarita.
How to rim the glass so it stays on the outside: The trick is to dip the glass at an angle instead of turning it upside down! Spread the black salt, Tajin or both on a small plate. Run a lime wedge around the rim of the glass. Then hold your glass at a 45-degree angle and gently dip just the outside edge into the salt, rotating as you go until the entire rim or the section you want is coated. This helps keep the salt out of your drink!
