Apple Cinnamon Scones Ingredients

To make these Apple Cinnamon Scones, you will need:

  • Flour: I like to use unbleached organic white flour.. You could also use white (light) spelt flour but may need to add a touch more or reduce the amount of buttermilk to get the right consistency.
  • Butter: Use cold, unsalted butter.
  • Buttermilk: Helps to make these scones soft and tender.
  • Egg: Helps to create the soft texture.
  • Honey: For sweetness
  • Apple: Diced apple adds some delicious Fall flavour.
  • Cinnamon: Such a delicious warming spice to pair with the apples.
  • Baking Soda + Baking Powder + Salt + Vanilla Extract: Just some typical baking ingredients.
  • Topping: The tops get brushed with some cream or milk and sprinkled with cinnamon sugar before baking.

How To Make Apple Cinnamon Scones

These Apple Cinnamon Scones are easy to make which is how I like my baked goods! Simply…

  1. Pulse Together Dry Ingredients + Butter: Place flour, baking powder, baking soda, cinnamon and salt in a food processor and pulse to combine. Add butter and pulse again until pea sized crumbs form. Be careful not to over mix! This is the food processor that I use and love.
  2. Whisk Together Wet Ingredients: In a separate bowl, whisk together the egg, honey, vanilla extract and buttermilk.
  3. Combine: Add wet ingredients to the food processor and pulse until it forms a ball. Stir in the diced apple. The dough should be soft and slightly sticky.
  4. Shape Into Scones: Shape dough into a disc and cut into 8 wedges. Refrigerate for at least 15 minutes
  5. Topping Time: Brush the tops of the scones with cream or milk. Sprinkle on sugar/cinnamon mixture.
  6. Bake: Bake for 15-20 minutes in a 400F oven. Get ready for your kitchen to smell amazing!

Use Cold Ingredients + Chill Dough: This is the secret to tender scones that don’t over-spread in the oven. Make sure your butter, egg and buttermilk are all cold and don’t forget the step to chill the scones in the fridge before baking.

Make Ahead + Storage Tips

Can scones be made ahead?

Scones are definitely the best when they are fresh and warm from the oven. If you want to get a head start, just prepare the scones up until the point of baking. Pop them in the fridge and then bake them off later in the day or the next morning.

How do you freeze scones?

Freezing is a great way to easily enjoy these delicious scones whenever craving strikes. You can either freeze them before baking or after baking.

FREEZE BEFORE BAKING: Freeze the unbaked scone wedges on a baking sheet until frozen. Then you can layer them in a container or freezer bag and store in the freezer. To serve: Thaw in the fridge overnight and bake as directed. Or bake straight from frozen by adding a few minutes to the cook time.

FREEZE AFTER BAKING: Store baked scones in the freezer once they have completely cooled. To serve: Thaw on the counter for a few hours or place in the fridge overnight. Warm up in a 300F oven for 10 minutes.

How long do scones last?

These scones definitely don’t last long in my house.😉 However, if you are storing them, they will generally last for:

  • Room Temperature: About 1-2 days stored in a container at room temperature
  • Fridge: About 1 week stored in the fridge
  • Freezer: 3 months in the freezer (will last longer in the freezer but 3 months is the rule of thumb for best quality)

Description

These Apple Cinnamon Scones are tender, delicious and filled with chopped apples and cinnamon. The perfect Fall treat!

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 cups unbleached all purpose flour
  • 2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup cold unsalted butter, diced
  • 1 egg
  • 1/4 cup honey
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/3 cup buttermilk
  • 1 cup peeled and finely diced apple (approx. 1 medium apple)

Topping:

  • 1 tablespoon cream or milk
  • 1 tablespoon rapadura or organic cane sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven: Preheat the oven to 400F /200C.  Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  2. Pulse dry ingredients + butter: Place flour, baking powder, baking soda, cinnamon and salt in a food processor and pulse to combine.  Add butter and pulse again until pea sized crumbs form (don’t over mix!).
  3. Finish dough: In a separate bowl, whisk together the egg, honey, vanilla extract and buttermilk.  Add to the food processor and pulse until it just starts to combine into a ball.  Stir in the diced apple.  The dough should be soft and slightly sticky.
  4. Shape scones: Lightly flour a flat surface and dump dough onto it.  Sprinkle a bit of flour on top as well.  Shape the dough into a disc (about 3/4 – 1 inch thick) and cut into 8 wedges.  Place wedges onto previously prepared baking sheet, leaving some space between each one.  Refrigerate for 15 minutes.  This helps to prevent the scones from spreading out in the oven.  Note:  If you don’t have room for the baking sheet in your fridge, place the scones on a plate to refrigerate and once ready to bake, transfer them to the baking sheet.
  5. Brush tops: Brush the tops of the scones with cream or milk.  Mix together the sugar and cinnamon topping in a small bowl and sprinkle over the tops.
  6. Bake: Bake for 15-20 minutes or until golden brown and baked through.  Cool for a few minutes before digging in.

Notes

  • This is the food processor that I use and love.
  • Remember to use cold ingredients and chill dough: Make sure the butter, egg and buttermilk are all cold and don’t forget to chill the scones in the fridge before baking.  This is the secret to tender scones that don’t over-spread in the oven.
  • Make Ahead + Freezing Tips:  See blog post above for directions on making scones ahead of time and how to freeze.
