What Are Bliss Balls

Bliss balls (also known as energy balls, energy bites or power balls) are sweet, no-bake snacks made from whole food ingredients like dates, nuts, seeds, oats, etc. The exact ingredients will vary from recipe to recipe depending on the flavor.

3 Reasons To Make These Chocolate Bliss Balls

  1. Takes just minutes to make! Simply throw everything in the food processor, blitz together and roll into balls – quick and easy!
  2. Healthier snack option! Made with real food ingredients and no refined sugar, these are the perfect grab and go snack for any time of the day. Or the perfect treat when those late night chocolate cravings hit but you want a healthier choice!
  3. Great for meal prep! Make a batch and stash them in the fridge or freezer.

Ingredient Notes

You will need the following ingredients to make these chocolate energy balls…

Labelled photo of ingredients needed to make chocolate bliss balls.

Detailed ingredient list and directions located in the recipe card below.

  • Rolled Oats: I like to use old fashioned rolled oats since they easily process into a “flour” for a smooth texture.
  • Medjool Dates: They add natural sweetness and stickiness to ensure the energy balls hold together. Use large fresh Medjool dates that are soft, squishy and sticky.
  • Dutch Processed Cocoa Powder: You could also use unsweetened cocoa powder or raw cacao powder instead. My preference is the Dutch-processed cocoa powder since it has a smoother, richer chocolate flavor.
  • Ground Flaxseed and Hemp Hearts: To pack some extra nutrition into these balls!
  • Almond Butter: Use creamy almond butter. It brings some richness to the energy balls as well as providing some binding properties.
  • Vanilla Extract: Adds great flavor and works well with the chocolate.
  • Sea Salt: Just a pinch of sea salt to really bring out the flavors in the chocolate.

Special Equipment Needed

You will need a food processor to process together the ingredients into the perfect texture. A blender doesn’t really work for this – just results in a mess! My favorite food processor is the Breville Sous Chef. I’ve had it for ages and absolutely love it compared to others I have tried throughout my life.

How To Make Chocolate Bliss Balls

You’ll love how easy these bliss balls are to make! Simply blitz everything together in your food processor, roll into balls and you’re done!

  1. Add ingredients to food processor: Place 1 cup of rolled oats in the food processor and process until it forms a flour. Turn off the food processor and add the remaining ingredients (10 large pitted Medjool dates, 1/4 cup creamy almond butter, 1/4 cup Dutch-processed cocoa powder, 2 tablespoons ground flaxseed, 2 tablespoons hemp hearts, 1 teaspoon vanilla extract, 1/4 teaspoon sea salt).
  2. Process: Run the food processor until everything is combined and forms a ball. Note: Keep running the food processor until the mixture combines into one sticky fudgy mass like in the photo.
  3. Form balls: Roll the mixture into small balls (about a heaping tablespoon per ball). Optional: If you wish, you can roll each ball in some extra cocoa powder.
  4. Chill and serve: I recommend refrigerating them for about 10-15 minutes first to firm up slightly. Enjoy!

Helpful tip

Make sure to use fresh Medjool dates!

It’s important to use fresh Medjool dates that are soft and chewy. They act as a binder to keep the bliss balls together and give them a “fudgy” texture. You can usually find Medjool dates in the produce section of your grocery store. If your dates are a little old and dry, soak them in hot water first for 10 minutes.

Variations

  • Use a different nut or seed butter: Instead of almond butter, you could also use peanut butter, cashew butter or sunflower seed butter.
  • Make them gluten free: Make sure to use certified gluten free oats. Even though oats are naturally gluten free, they are often processed in the same facility as grains containing gluten.
  • Make them grain free: Replace the oats with almond flour or shredded coconut.
  • Mix through extra chocolate: If you like some texture, mix through some mini chocolate chips or cacao nibs before rolling into balls.

Storage

  • To store: Store in an airtight container in the fridge for 1-2 weeks
  • To freeze: Store in the freezer for up to 3 months. When ready to enjoy, simply let them thaw quickly at room temperature. My little tip when freezing these is to first freeze them on a baking sheet for about 15 minutes before transferring them to a freezer safe bag or container so that they don’t stick together.
