Here’s Why You’ll Love Them

  • Healthier summer treat: Satisfy your sweet tooth with these chocolate banana popsicles – a healthier homemade treat made from a few simple ingredients.
  • Super delicious: Chocolate and bananas are such an amazing combination.
  • Easy to make: Just a few minutes of prep – the hard part is waiting for them to freeze!
  • Great no-cook recipe for overripe bananas: This recipe is a fantastic way to use up overripe bananas without needing to turn on the oven. If you have lots to use up, you can also make these Banana Overnight Oats and some regular Banana Popsicles as well.

Ingredients You’ll Need

To make these homemade chocolate banana popsicles, you will need the following ingredients:

Labelled photo of ingredients needed to make chocolate banana popsicles.
  • Bananas: Use ripe bananas for sweeter and more flavorful popsicles.
  • Creamy Liquid: Cream, full fat coconut milk or milk of choice.
  • Cocoa Powder: I like to use dutch processed cocoa powder since it has a richer chocolate flavor.
  • Sweetener: Honey or maple syrup for some additional sweetness. Add to taste based on personal preference and how sweet the bananas are.
  • Vanilla Extract: Adds delicious flavor that pairs well with the chocolate and banana.
  • Salt: Just a pinch to help bring out the flavor of the chocolate.
  • Optional Topping: You can also choose to dip the popsicles in chocolate and chopped nuts. You will need chocolate chips, coconut oil and your favorite type of nuts finely chopped (walnuts, pecans, almonds, peanuts, etc.).

Detailed ingredient list and directions located in the recipe card below.

Special Equipment

You will need a blender and a popsicle mold to make these.

  • Blender: Use a blender to blend up the popsicle mixture. I use a Vitamix which is a high-powered blender but this mixture is easily blended so any blender should work just fine.
  • Popsicle Mold: A good popsicle mold is key to avoid the frustration of them not releasing. Here are some of my top picks for the best popsicle molds. My favorite is this stainless steel popsicle mold which I have had for many years.

How To Make Chocolate Banana Popsicles

Ready to make some chocolate banana popsicles? They are so easy! Simply…

Numbered photo collage showing how to make chocolate banana popsicles.
  1. Add ingredients to blender: Place all the ingredients into a blender.
  2. Blend: Blend until smooth.
  3. Fill popsicle molds: Pour mixture into popsicle molds, leaving a bit of space at the top for them to expand. This recipe makes six popsicles using this popsicle mold but quantity will vary depending on the size of mold you use.
  4. Freeze: The popsicles usually take about 4 to 6 hours to freeze but the timing will depend on your freezer and the size of your popsicles. I usually just allow them to freeze overnight and enjoy the next day! To serve, run the popsicle mold under warm water for a few seconds until they easily release. Enjoy!

Optional: Dip them in chocolate! These popsicles are delicious as is but you can take it one step further if you like by dipping the frozen popsicles in melted chocolate (or drizzling it over) and sprinkling on some chopped nuts like pecans, walnuts, almonds or peanuts. You just need to work quickly! Place the popsicles on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper and pop back into the freezer until set.

Variations

Looking for some more ways to customize these popsicles? Here are a few ideas:

  • Add peanut butter: Add some peanut butter to the mixture when blending together for chocolate peanut butter banana popsicles.
  • Add mini chocolate chips: Add some mini chocolate chips to the popsicle molds before pouring the mixture in.
  • Make it creamier: Make an even creamier version by using heavy cream or yogurt.
  • Dip in sprinkles or shredded coconut: If you choose the option to dip in chocolate, you can skip the nuts and dip into sprinkles or shredded coconut after instead. Fun idea for kids!

A Few Questions Answered

Can you use frozen bananas?

Absolutely! Just semi-thaw them first so that they blend easily into a pourable mixture.

How long does it take for the popsicles to freeze?

It usually takes between 4 to 6 hours for the popsicles to fully freeze. However, the timing will depend on how cold your freezer is and the size of your popsicles. I usually just freeze them overnight and enjoy the next day.

How do you store these popsicles?

You can either store them directly in the popsicle mold (if not dipped in the chocolate and nuts) or wrap each popsicle up in plastic wrap or reusable beeswax food wrap and store in a freezer bag or airtight container. Package quickly so they don’t melt!

How long do they keep in the freezer?

You can store them in the freezer for 1 to 2 months. They won’t go bad if stored longer but the texture might change and become frosty.

Description

Looking for an easy and delicious summer treat? Cool off with these homemade chocolate banana popsicles – they’re creamy, chocolaty and oh so yummy!

Ingredients

Scale

For The Popsicles

  • 3 large ripe bananas
  • 1/4 cup cream, full fat coconut milk or milk of choice
  • 3 tablespoons cocoa powder (I like to use dutch processed cocoa powder)
  • 2 tablespoons honey or maple syrup, or to taste
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • pinch of salt

For Chocolate & Nut Topping (optional)

  • 1/2 cup chocolate chips
  • 1 tablespoon coconut oil
  • 1/4 cup finely chopped nuts of choice (e.g. walnuts, pecans, almonds, peanuts)

Instructions

  1. Blend: Place all the popsicle ingredients into a blender and blend until smooth.
  2. Pour into popsicle molds: Pour mixture into popsicle molds.
  3. Freeze: Freeze for at least 4-6 hours or until solid (preferably overnight). Enjoy as is or continue with the optional chocolate and nut topping.
  4. Dip in chocolate and nuts: This is optional. Melt together chocolate chips and coconut oil (allow to cool down for a few minutes if too hot).  Dip the top half of the popsicles into the melted chocolate and sprinkle on the chopped nuts.  Serve immediately or place on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper and put back in the freezer until set.

Notes

  • This is my favorite popsicle mold which I have been using for many years now after ditching the frustrating hard plastic ones.  This recipe makes 6 popsicles using this mold but quantity will vary depending on the size of popsicle mold you use.
  • Make sure to use ripe bananas! The riper the bananas are, the sweeter and more flavorful the popsicles will be. This is a great no-cook recipe to use up overripe bananas.
  • Store in freezer for 1-2 months.  Keep popsicles stored in the popsicle mold (if not dipped) or wrap each one up in plastic wrap or reusable beeswax food wrap and store in a freezer bag or airtight container.

Usually I’m not a fan of combining fruit with chocolate (unless I’m dipping!) but I always make an exception for bananas. I loved the flavour of these popsicles and the texture was very similar to a fudgsicle!

Tell me about it! I used the cheap hard plastic ones forever and found them so frustrating (many times only the stick would pull out without the popsicle attached). I never knew they could release so easily with the right mold! Definitely a bit of an investment but I have had mine now for over 5 years and it is still like new. Also love that each popsicle is individual so I don’t need to pull the entire tray out of the freezer every time I want to grab one.
