Ingredient Notes

All you need is a few real food ingredients to make this simple Halloween pasta!

Labelled photo of ingredients needed to make Halloween spaghetti with burrata ghost.
  • Spaghetti: I like to use spaghetti for this but you could use any type of pasta you like.
  • Tomato Sauce/Marinara or Pesto: Pick whichever one you like best! You can use either homemade or jarred sauce. If you’re looking for some homemade options, the cherry tomato garlic butter sauce in this Burrata Pasta recipe is delicious and so is this Pistachio Pesto.
  • Burrata: Make sure to drain off the liquid that the burrata is stored in and pat it dry. I like to use small balls of burrata so that each person gets their own burrata ghost plated up individually. The burrata I used was a 125 gram ball (4-5 ounces). The smaller burrata can either be found individually packaged or 2 in a package like this one where the label says it contains 2-4oz balls. If you can only find the larger 8 ounce/227 gram burrata, simply serve the pasta family style on a platter with a larger ghost on top (or multiples depending on how many people you are serving).
  • Black Olives: To make the face on the burrata ghosts!

How To Make Halloween Spaghetti with Burrata Ghosts

Let me show you how to turn your regular spaghetti dinner into a spooky Halloween pasta with creamy burrata ghosts on top. So fun and easy!

  1. Toss cooked spaghetti with sauce: Cook the spaghetti according to package directions. Drain and toss with the sauce of your choice. Plate the spaghetti.
  2. Top with burrata: To each plate, add a small ball of burrata cheese on top of the spaghetti.
  3. Cut burrata open: Gently slice open the bottom of the burrata, scoop out some of the rich creamy center and form it into the shape of a ghost’s tail. This does not need to be perfect so don’t fuss with it too much!
  4. Make the face from black olives: Cut small circles from the ends of black olives for the eyes and use a sliced olive for the mouth. I found that a straw works perfectly to punch out small eye shapes from the end pieces of the black olives. Place the olive pieces on your burrata to complete your cute little ghost. Your Halloween spaghetti is now ready to serve!

Possible Variations

  • Swap the olives: Don’t like olives? You can either pick them off before eating or swap for another dark ingredient to make the face. You could use bacon bits, black beans, capers or draw on the face with a balsamic glaze.
  • Use a different pasta shape: The twirly long spaghetti adds a spooky touch but any pasta shape could be used so choose what you love!
  • Use another sauce: I chose to make this with tomato sauce or pesto since I figured the colors were great for Halloween and added a nice contrast to the burrata ghost on top. However, you can also use any type of pasta sauce you love. This would also be delicious with a Bolognese sauce.
  • Make a family style platter: Serve it up on a large platter instead of individually plated. You could top it with multiple small burrata ghosts or purchase a larger ball of burrata for one big ghost in the center.

A Few Tips

Helpful Tips

  • Take burrata out of the fridge first: Burrata tastes best when it has a chance to come to room temperature first so just pull it out of the fridge before you start.
  • Prep the olive pieces: While the spaghetti cooks, cut and set aside the olive pieces for the face so that the pasta can quickly be assembled and served later.
  • Reserve a bit of starchy pasta water: Set aside a little of the starchy pasta water before draining the spaghetti. Add as needed when tossing the spaghetti with sauce to achieve the perfect consistency to coat the pasta. If using pesto, a little butter is also a nice addition.
  • Use high quality ingredients: This recipe only has a few ingredients so the flavors of them really shine through. Using quality ingredients will make a big difference in the taste of the final dish.
