5 Reasons To Love This Green Juice Recipe

  1. It’s a “feel good recipe”! That’s what I call recipes that are loaded with goodness and leave you feeling nourished and amazing. This refreshing green juice totally fits the bill – packed with veggies (and some fruit) and bursting with fresh flavors. It’s also perfect for sneaking in more greens or rescuing produce that’s been sitting in the fridge a little too long!
  2. No juicer needed! I don’t have one (I’ve heard they are a pain to clean and honestly I don’t need another appliance taking up space). But I have a great blender and that’s all you need to make this green juice! You can either enjoy it as a whole blended juice that retains all the nutrients and fiber or strain it with a nut milk bag for that classic green juice consistency.
  3. Tastes great! I love a good green juice but I’ve had some that taste a little “too green”. Not this one! This green juice recipe has the perfect balance of flavors.
  4. More affordable! I love treating myself to a fresh green juice but the price – OUCH! Making it at home is definitely less expensive.
  5. Easy to make! Ready to sip in just 10 minutes.

Ingredient Notes

Here’s what you’ll need to make this green blender juice recipe…

Labelled photo of green juice ingredients.

Detailed ingredient list and directions located in the recipe card below.

  • Leafy greens: Chopped kale, baby spinach or a combination of both.
  • Green veggies: Celery and cucumber (I like using English cucumber). These two veggies are awesome for green juice because they add lots of moisture and a fresh, light flavor.
  • Fresh mint: Adds such a refreshing pop of flavor to the juice.
  • Lemon: The acidity of fresh lemon juice brightens up the green juice perfectly.
  • Fruit: Apple and pineapple add just the right amount of sweetness.
  • Ginger: Some fresh ginger for a zesty kick.
  • Water or coconut water: A little liquid is needed to get things moving in the blender.
  • Ice cubes: The ice keeps the mixture cold so it doesn’t heat up while blending.

Equipment Needed

All you need is a blender and a nut milk bag and you’re all set!

  • Blender: A high-powered blender will work best. I love my Vitamix (this is the Vitamix model that I have had for many years).
  • Nut Milk Bag: A nut milk bag is the best way to strain out the pulp and get that smooth, classic green juice texture. I’ve tried a few different ones and these nut milk bags are my favorite – easy to squeeze, high quality and really durable.

Customize it

Use this recipe as a starting point and then have fun experimenting with the ingredients based on what you like or have on hand. That’s the fun part of blender juicing – the combinations are pretty much endless. Here are a few variations and swaps you can try with this green juice recipe:

  • Switch up the leafy greens: I usually go with spinach, kale, or a mix of both, but you can totally swap in Swiss chard, beet greens, romaine lettuce, Bok choy, or any leafy greens you enjoy.
  • Instead of fresh mint: You could use parsley or a combination of mint and parsley is nice too.
  • Mix up the citrus: Try lime juice or grapefruit juice in place of the lemon juice.
  • Change up the fruit: Instead of apple and pineapple, feel free to experiment with fruits like green grapes, oranges, pears, mango, or peaches. Just avoid fruits that can turn the juice brown like berries.

How To Make Green Juice In A Blender

It’s super easy to make blender green juice. Let’s walk through it step-by-step!

  1. Place ingredients into the blender: Add all the ingredients to the blender in the following order – 1 cup water or coconut water, 3 cups chopped kale or baby spinach (or combination of both), ¼ cup fresh mint, ½ cucumber (chopped), 2 stalks celery (chopped), 1 green apple (cored), 1 cup chopped pineapple, juice of 1 lemon, 1-inch piece of peeled ginger and 1 cup of ice cubes.
  2. Blend the juice: Start the blender on low and slowly increase to high speed. Blend for 90 seconds or until completely smooth. Use the tamper if needed to get things started.
  3. Strain the juice: You can totally drink it as is for a whole food green juice but for a classic juice consistency, strain through a nut milk bag. Just pour the blended juice into the nut milk bag over a bowl or large measuring cup and squeeze out all the liquid.
  4. Serve: Pour into glasses and enjoy right away or transfer to a mason jar and store it in the fridge for later!

A Few Tips

Blender Juice Tips

  • Make sure to toss in a cup of ice cubes! Blending for 90 seconds in a high-powered blender does an awesome job of breaking down the fibers for that smooth, juice-like consistency. But it can also heat the mixture up like a soup – the ice keeps everything nice and chilled.
  • Try the Knead-Squeeze method! Instead of squeezing your nut milk bag into a super tight ball that feels like it’s about to burst, give it a gentle knead instead. Here’s how: Twist the bag just so the top is closed but the contents have room to move and around and are kneadable. Hold the twisted top of the bag firmly between your thumb and the base of your forefinger to keep everything contained, then start kneading the bag back and forth. This mixes the pulp with the liquid as you go and helps the juice flow out way faster. As the bag empties, twist it tighter and keep kneading until you’re left with just the pulp. It works so well because kneading shifts the pulp away from the inside of the bag, making it easier for the juice to pass through. You’ll be amazed at how much quicker and easier this is!

Storage

  • To store: This green blender juice will last for 2-3 days in the fridge stored in a sealed jar. The juice will separate as it sits (this is normal!) – just give it a good shake before enjoying.
  • To freeze: You can freeze green juice for up to 3 months. I love pouring it into ice cube trays – my go-to is the Half Cup Souper Cubes Tray. To thaw, I just pop a couple of cubes into a mason jar and let them defrost in the fridge overnight. Give it a good shake before drinking, and you’re all set!

FAQ

Do you have to strain blender juice?

Nope! You can drink it straight from the blender if you want to keep all that fiber and enjoy it as a whole food juice.

What’s the texture like if you drink this as a whole food juice?

Blending this recipe in a high powered blender (like a Vitamix) for 90 seconds gives you a juice-like consistency (not thick like a smoothie). That said, it’ll still have more body or “thickness” compared to straining it through a nut milk bag.

What type of blender should I use for blender juice?

There are so many blenders out there, but I highly recommend investing in a high-powered one with a strong motor. They work like a dream and last a long time. I personally love my Vitamix and use it for tons of things.

I don’t have a nut milk bag – what else can I use?

You can use a fine mesh sieve instead – just press the solids with the back of a spoon to get as much juice out as possible. You might need to run it through the sieve twice. It does an ok job but I have found that the nut milk bag produces the best results since it strains out all the pulp.

Does this green juice taste “too green”?

I don’t think so! I think this green juice has the perfect balance of flavors! The apple and pineapple add a nice touch of sweetness, while the mint, lemon, and ginger give it a bright, fresh kick.
