Ingredient Notes
Here’s what you’ll need to make this Creamy Dijon Sauce recipe…
- Heavy cream: Heavy whipping cream forms the base of this sauce to make it rich and creamy. I don’t recommend substituting it for something with a lower fat content or the sauce will be thin and not as luscious.
- Dijon mustard: This smooth mustard adds the flavor to this sauce and also helps to thicken it.
- Whole grain mustard: A little bit of whole grain mustard (or old fashioned mustard) adds some little pops of texture and visual interest to the sauce.
- Fresh herbs: Some finely chopped fresh herbs provides a wonderful finishing touch and pop of freshness. Some options include: tarragon (my favorite – gives the sauce a “French” flavor), thyme, combination of thyme/parsley or a combination of chives/parsley.
- Salt and pepper: To season the sauce. I like to use sea salt and freshly ground black pepper.

How To Make Dijon Mustard Cream Sauce
You’re going to want to make this gourmet tasting sauce all the time once you see how easy it is!
- Combine cream and mustard: To a medium saucepan, add the heavy cream and both mustards. Stir together and bring to a gentle simmer over medium heat for a couple minutes until combined and slightly thickened.
- Season: Reduce heat to low, stir through the fresh herbs and season to taste with salt and pepper. The sauce will continue to thicken up as it cools down. Whisk in a bit of water if the sauce seems too thick.
- Serve: That’s it – told you it was easy! Drizzle over your dish and enjoy.
Extra flavor Tip
Make a pan sauce!
If you’re pan searing meat like chicken breast or pork tenderloin, make this sauce directly in the same pan afterwards while the meat rests (instead of in a separate saucepan). The caramelized bits at the bottom of the pan add so much extra flavor to the sauce and one pan also means less dishes! See the pan sauce version in action in this pork tenderloin with mustard sauce recipe.
Variations
- Skip the whole grain mustard: I like to add some whole grain mustard in for texture but if you prefer a completely smooth sauce, just swap it for some additional Dijon mustard.
- Add some garlic or shallots: You can also start the sauce off by first sautéing some finely minced garlic or shallot in some butter before proceeding with the rest of the recipe.
- Add a little extra zing: Add a little horseradish to the sauce.
Ways To Use Dijon Cream Sauce
Wondering what to serve this creamy mustard sauce with? It’s so versatile and can be drizzled over a ton of dishes to instantly take it up a notch and elevate the flavors. Here are a few ideas:
- Meat and Seafood: Perfect for serving over chicken, pork, steak, scallops, shrimp, salmon or any other type of fish.
- Potatoes: Delicious drizzled over some baby potatoes.
- Vegetables: It’s wonderful drizzled over roasted vegetables or veggies like asparagus, green beans and brussels sprouts.
FAQ
I wouldn’t recommend it! Dijon and yellow mustard have different flavors so the sauce just won’t taste the same. Dijon is creamy and contains less vinegar than yellow mustard. The Dijon mustard gives the sauce its complex taste and also helps to thicken it. It’s one of the main components in this simple sauce so I wouldn’t recommend substituting it.
You can store leftovers in an airtight container in the fridge for 3-4 days. Reheat in a saucepan over low heat.
I don’t recommend it since it can separate and the texture can change.

I love dijon mustard and use it in all my dips and flavourings. I like it how you have used grainy dijon mustard for that texture as well as some zing. Going to try it out with some horseradish too as you have suggested, for that extra zing. Thanks for sharing.

This sauce was a nice change from hollandaise for asparagus. Great recipe!

I like that you use double mustard for this recipe! You think it would be alright with just one of them too? Cause I’ve just got whole grain in the fridge…
Unfortunately the Dijon mustard is a main must-have ingredient for this simple Dijon Cream Sauce recipe. You could skip the wholegrain mustard (I just like some for the texture) and substitute for Dijon mustard but not vice versa.
