    Reasons To Love This Cocktail

If you like margaritas, then you are going to love this delicious passion fruit version! The passion fruit adds a sweet and tart tropical flavor that pairs perfectly with the other margarita ingredients.

    • The perfect summer cocktail and great for taco night and Cinco de Mayo too!
    • It’s easy to make! Just 5 ingredients and ready in 5 minutes.
    • This recipe is easy to scale so you can make a single drink or pitcher margaritas for a crowd! The recipe card at the bottom includes instructions for both.

    Ingredients You’ll Need

Ready to make a passion fruit margarita? You will need the following ingredients…

Labelled overhead image of ingredients needed to make a passion fruit margarita.
    • Passion Fruit: This recipe uses passion fruit pulp. Slice the passion fruit in half and scoop out the pulp inside. Both the flesh and seeds are edible. Frozen passion fruit pulp or packaged passion fruit puree could also be used.
    • Tequila: Any good quality tequila that you like. I used a Reposado tequila.
    • Orange Liqueur: I used Cointreau but feel free to use other brands.
    • Lime Juice: Fresh lime juice is a must for the best flavor! Each margarita uses roughly the juice of one lime.
    • Honey: Passion fruit can be a little tart so a touch of honey helps to balance things out. You could also use agave nectar or simple syrup instead.
    • Ice: To keep the margarita cold and refreshing.
    • Salt for rim (optional): If you enjoy a salted rim, I recommend mixing some Tajin seasoning into the salt. The chili-lime flavor pairs really well with the passion fruit.

Detailed ingredient list and directions located in the recipe card below.

How To Make A Passion Fruit Margarita

You’ll be sipping on one within minutes! Let’s shake up one of these simple passion fruit cocktails!

Numbered collage graphic showing how to make passion fruit margaritas step-by-step.
    1. Rim the glass (optional): If you like a salted rim, then prep your glass first and set it aside. Not sure how? Learn how to rim a margarita glass below.
    2. Shake it up: Add the passion fruit pulp, tequila, orange liqueur, lime juice and honey to a cocktail shaker along with a handful of ice. Cover and shake vigorously for about 15-30 seconds. Alternatively, you can stir all of the ingredients together or shake them up in a mason jar.
    3. Strain and serve: Fill the prepared glass with ice, strain in the passion fruit margarita mix over the top and garnish if desired. Serve and enjoy!

Tip: If your honey is not super runny, mix it together with a touch of warm water in a small bowl first to form a syrup. Thick honey doesn’t tend to combine well with the other ingredients when shaking together a margarita.

    Garnish Ideas

Rimming the glass with salt or tajin (or a mix) is a garnish that is done before pouring the drink. Here are a few other garnish ideas that can be added right before serving: add a slice or wedge of lime, sprig of mint, or float half a passion fruit on top. You can also add in a few of the passion fruit seeds by scooping them out of the cocktail shaker after straining.

    Make A Pitcher!

Want to serve this up for a party? Make a larger quantity in a pitcher! Pitcher margaritas are perfect for a crowd if you are entertaining. It’s much easier than shaking up a ton of individual drinks.

To make a pitcher of passion fruit margaritas: Stir the ingredients together in a pitcher until well combined and store in the fridge until needed. To serve, simply pour into prepped glasses filled with ice and garnish as desired.

Measurements for a pitcher with 8 servings can be found in the recipe card notes below.

How To Rim A Glass With Salt

If you enjoy a salted rim, rim the glass before making the margarita so that it is ready to go. For this margarita recipe, I like to mix some Tajin seasoning into the salt since it adds a nice flavor that complements the passion fruit.

    1. Spread salt, Tajin or a combination of both on a small plate in an even layer.
    2. Cut a notch in the middle of a lime wedge and slide it around the rim of the glass.
    3. Dip the rim in the salt so that it sticks.
    4. Ta-da! Your glass is rimmed and ready for your margarita!
Collage graphic showing how to rim a margarita glass step-by-step.

Keeping The Salt Rim On The Outside

When you rim the glass by placing it upside down into the salt, some of the salt also sticks to the inside of the rim. This salt can then later fall into your drink. Some people don’t mind this but my preference is to keep it on the outside.

It’s really easy! After running the lime wedge around the rim of the glass, just tilt the glass at an angle so that only the outside edge gets dipped into the salt. Rotate and dip until the entire rim is coated.

    Variations

    • Make a sweet passion fruit cocktail: This margarita recipe is a stronger drink that is meant to be sipped slowly. If you prefer a sweeter easy drinking cocktail, add in some passion fruit juice, adjust sweetener to taste and serve in a taller glass.
    • Make it spicy: Add a few slices of jalapeno for a spicy kick.
    • Swap the lime juice: Lime juice is the obvious choice for margaritas but you could also use lemon juice or even grapefruit juice instead.
    • Add mango: You could make a mango passion fruit margarita by also adding in some pureed mango. These two fruits taste great together!

    A Few Questions Answered

Where do I find passion fruit?

If you live in an area where passion fruit is grown locally then they will be super easy to find and I envy you (I sure ate my fill when I lived in Australia!). For the rest of us, most well-stocked grocery stores will carry them in a section with the tropical fruit.

Do I need to use fresh passion fruit?

I love the flavor of fresh passion fruit but depending on where you live they can be difficult to find or expensive. You can also use frozen passion fruit pulp or a packaged passion fruit puree. If using frozen, thaw it first and use 1 ounce per margarita.

What type of tequila should you use?

Reposado, silver or blanco are great for margaritas but any type of quality tequila will work. I used a reposado tequila in these.

Can you make it ahead of time?

Since these are super quick to make, I like to just make them fresh if shaking up one or two. If making a larger quantity like a pitcher, you can just mix everything together except the ice and place in the fridge until ready to serve.

    Description

Passion Fruit Margarita! A classic margarita on the rocks with a tropical passion fruit twist. This easy-to-make passion fruit cocktail is the perfect summer drink and great for Cinco de Mayo or taco night too!

    Ingredients

    Scale
    • 1 ounce (30 ml) passion fruit pulp, see notes
    • 1 ½ ounces (45 ml) tequila
    • 1 ounce (30 ml) orange liqueur (I like to use Cointreau)
    • 1 ounce (30 ml) fresh lime juice (about the juice of 1 lime)
    • 1 tablespoon honey, or to taste (can also use agave nectar)
    • ice
    • Optional: lime wedge and salt, tajin or a combo of both for rimming the glass

    Instructions

    1. Rim the glass (optional): If you like a salted rim, then prep the glass first.  Run a lime wedge along the rim of your glass and dip the rim into salt, tajin or a combo of both.  Set the glass aside.
    2. Shake up the margarita mix: Add the passion fruit pulp, tequila, orange liqueur, lime juice and honey to a cocktail shaker along with a handful of ice.  Cover and shake vigorously for about 15-30 seconds.
    3. Strain and serve: Fill the prepared glass with ice and strain in the passion fruit margarita mix over the top.  Garnish if desired and enjoy!

    Notes

    • Passion Fruit: Each margarita uses 1 ounce (30 ml) passion fruit pulp which is 2 tablespoons.  You will need 1-2 passion fruits, depending on size.  Simply, slice the passion fruit in half and scoop out the pulp inside.  Both the flesh and seeds are edible.  Alternatively, you can also use frozen passion fruit pulp (thaw it first) or passion fruit puree.
    • Honey: If your honey is not super runny, mix it together with a touch of warm water in a small bowl first to form a syrup.  Thick honey doesn’t tend to combine well with the other ingredients in the cocktail shaker.
    • Make A Pitcher (8 Servings): Pitcher margaritas are perfect for a crowd!  To make a pitcher with 8 servings, you will need: 1 cup passion fruit pulp, 1 ½ cups tequila, 1 cup orange liqueur, 1 cup fresh lime juice and 1/2 cup honey (or to taste).  Stir everything together in a pitcher until well combined and store in the fridge until needed.  Serve over ice.
