Tip: The key to delicious banana popsicles is using ripe bananas! The riper the bananas are, the sweeter and more flavorful the popsicles will be. This recipe is a great way to use up overripe bananas.

Special Equipment

Just grab a blender and a popsicle mold and you’re ready to get started!

  • Blender: This is needed to blend up the banana popsicle mixture. I use Vitamix which is a high-powered blender but it blends this mixture with incredible ease so any blender should work just fine.
  • Popsicle Mold: Avoid frustration by using a good popsicle mold that doesn’t hold your popsicles hostage! Here are some of my top picks for the best popsicle molds. My favorite is this stainless steel popsicle mold which I have had for many years.

  1. Add ingredients to blender: Place all the ingredients into a blender.
  2. Blend: Blend until smooth.
  3. Pour into popsicle molds: Pour mixture into popsicle molds, leaving a bit of space at the top for them to expand. This recipe makes six popsicles using this popsicle mold but quantity will vary depending on the size of mold used.
  4. Freeze: The popsicles usually take about 4-6 hours to freeze but this will vary depending on your freezer and the size of your popsicles. I usually just freeze overnight and enjoy the next day! To serve, run the popsicle mold under warm water for a few seconds until they easily release. Enjoy!

Variations

Feel free to customize your banana popsicles. Here are a few ideas…

  • Add-ins: Add some additional flavor to the mixture with an add-in like cinnamon, nutmeg, peanut butter, mini chocolate chips or an additional fruit like strawberries.
  • Make it tropical: Make a tropical variation by adding some mango and using coconut milk.
  • Make it creamier: Make a creamier version by using heavy cream or yogurt.
  • Dip it in chocolate: Dip or drizzle with melted chocolate and roll in chopped nuts, shredded coconut or sprinkles if you like.

A Few Questions Answered

How long does it take for the banana popsicles to freeze?

It usually takes between 4 to 6 hours for the popsicles to freeze solid. However, the timing will depend on how cold your freezer is and the size of your popsicles. I usually just freeze overnight and enjoy the next day.

Can you use frozen bananas?

Absolutely! Just semi-thaw them first so that they blend easily into a pourable mixture.

How do you store homemade popsicles?

You can simply keep them stored in the popsicle mold. However, if you need your popsicle mold for a new batch, you can remove the popsicles, wrap each one up in plastic wrap or reusable beeswax food wrap and store in a freezer bag or airtight container. Package quickly so they don’t melt!

How long do homemade popsicles keep in the freezer?

You can store them in the freezer for 1 to 2 months. They won’t go bad if stored longer but may develop a frosty texture if stored too long.
