I love a good summer BBQ! Therefore, once the warmer weather hits, I just want to grill up everything in sight. After a long season of comforting soups, stews and casseroles, I crave grilled proteins and lots and lots of veggies. These Marinated Grilled Steaks hit the mark perfectly.

I made three variations of the marinade and since my family couldn’t decide on a favorite, I just included all of them! These steaks are juicy, packed full of flavor and super easy to make. They are perfect as part of a quick meal with a salad or for a big summer BBQ with all your favorite sides. These steaks would also be great to grill up for Father’s Day!

I have also included a number of tips for the best grilled steaks. So let’s light up the BBQ and get our grill on!

Marinated Grilled Steaks Ingredients

Only a few ingredients are needed for these delicious steaks:

  • Steaks: It should come as no surprise that steaks are the star ingredient here. Buy your favourite cut and focus on quality (local/grass-fed/pastured/organic meat if possible). I am fortunate to live in an area where I can purchase great local meat. However, if this isn’t an option for you, there are also some amazing delivery services available that deliver quality, thoughtfully sourced meat directly to your door. ButcherBox is one of these services that is available in the US and truLOCAL is available in some parts of Canada.
  • Marinade Ingredients: I have included recipes for three slightly different marinades so ingredients will vary. However, they all contain avocado oil, tamari, worcestershire sauce and garlic.

How To Make Marinated Grilled Steaks

In a few simple steps, you will be enjoying these marinated grilled steaks:

  1. Make the marinade: Whisk together all the marinade ingredients.
  2. Marinade the steaks: Place the steaks and marinade for up to 12 hours in a covered glass dish or a large Ziploc bag. I always aim to marinade for a few hours (i.e. marinade the steaks in the morning for an afternoon BBQ).
  3. Grill the steaks: Grill baby grill! Remove the steaks from the fridge 20 minutes beforehand. Pat them dry and season with salt and pepper. Then grill over high heat until cooked to your liking. Using a digital meat thermometer will guarantee perfection. (I use the Thermapen). Rest for 5 minutes and dig in! Feeling indulgent? Drizzle over this gorgonzola cream sauce!

Oiling the grill vs oiling the meat: There are two opposing camps on this with lots of disagreement on which is the best method. Try out both and do what works for you! Oiling the grill: Dip a wadded paper towel in a little oil and then using tongs, wipe the oil evenly over the grate before adding the meat. Oiling the meat: Simply brush the steaks with oil before seasoning with salt and pepper.

Steak Grilling Questions + Tips

How Long Should Steak Sit Out Before Grilling?

Remove steak from the fridge 20-30 minutes before cooking to bring up to room temperature. This will allow the steaks to cook more evenly.

What Temperature Should the BBQ Be For Steak?

Heat the grill on high until it reaches 450-500F.

How Long To Cook Steak? – Steak Grilling Times and Internal Temperatures

Pull the steaks off 5 degrees (F) before the desired degree of doneness. The temperature will continue to rise a bit while resting. A digital meat thermometer like the Thermapen will take the guess work out . Times below are approximations based on a 1 inch (2.5cm) thick steak.

Medium Rare130F (approx. 3 minutes per side)
Medium140F (approx. 4 minutes per side)
Medium Well150F (approx. 5 minutes per side)

How Long Should Steak Rest After Cooking?

Transfer steaks to a cutting board or plate, tent loosely with foil and allow to rest for 5 minutes before cutting into them. This allows the juices to redistribute instead of flowing out. Letting steak rest results in juicy steaks and who doesn’t want that!

Description

This Marinated Grilled Steaks recipe is super easy and results in delicious, flavorful, juicy steaks. Perfect for BBQ season!  There are 3 slightly different marinade variations below – all equally delicious so take your pick.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 pound of steak (approx. 2 average size steaks)
  • Himalayan or sea salt & freshly ground pepper, to taste

Marinade #1

  • 2 tablespoons avocado oil
  • 2 tablespoons tamari
  • 2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tablespoon maple syrup
  • 2 garlic cloves, minced
  • 1 small shallot, finely chopped
  • Freshly ground pepper, to taste

Marinade #2

  • 2 tablespoons avocado oil
  • 2 tablespoons tamari
  • 2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
  • 2 tablespoons balsamic vinegar (or lemon juice or red wine vinegar)
  • 1 teaspoon Dijon mustard
  • 2 garlic cloves, minced
  • 1 teaspoon onion powder
  • Freshly ground pepper, to taste

Marinade #3

  • 2 tablespoons avocado oil
  • 2 tablespoons tamari
  • 2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 teaspoon Dijon mustard
  • 2 garlic cloves, minced
  • Freshly ground pepper, to taste
  • 2 sprigs fresh rosemary

Instructions

  1. Make marinade:  Whisk together all the ingredients for the marinade variation you choose.
  2. Marinate the steaks:  Place the steaks and marinade in a covered glass dish or Ziploc bag.  Marinade for an hour at room temperature or up to 12 hours in the fridge.  Remove steaks from the fridge 20-30 minutes before cooking.
  3. Preheat BBQ:  Preheat the BBQ on high until heated to 450-500F.
  4. Prep steaks to grill:  Remove the steaks from the marinade and pat them down with paper towels.  Either oil the grill or the steaks.  Season steaks with salt and pepper.
  5. Grill:  Grill steaks to your preference.  Medium has an internal temperature of 140F (approx. 4 min per side for a 1 inch thick steak).  Rest for 5 minutes before serving.

Notes

  • The marinade recipes are for 1 lb of meat which is approx. 2 average size steaks.  Just scale up for a larger quantity of meat.
  • A good steak starts with good quality meat.  Buy locally if possible or try out a quality delivery service: ButcherBox (US) or truLOCAL (Canada)

Tips:

  • Remove steaks from the fridge 20-30 minutes before grilling for more even cooking.
  • Grill steaks over high heat (450-500F grill).
  • Pull steaks off grill 5 F before desired doneness since temperature will continue to rise a bit while resting.  See chart in the post.
  • Use a digital meat thermometer to ensure perfectly cooked steaks.  The Thermapen is my favorite.
  • Allow steaks to rest (transfer grilled steaks to a cutting board or plate, tent loosely with foil and rest for 5 min to allow juices to redistribute).

Delicious looking plate of food! What is funny is that it looks like we have the same flatware and fabulous steak knives. Can’t wait to try your recipe for these marinated grilled steaks. Perfect meal for Fathers Day.

    1. Vanessa | Maple + Mango says:

That’s funny Sandra! The flatware was actually a wedding gift (so pretty old haha) and the steak knives were a Father’s Day gift for my husband a few years back. I agree that many Dad’s would love to dig into this meal for Father’s Day! Let me know if you give it a try!
